English KS4

At Key Stage 4 students have four lessons of English a week.  They will follow the AQA English Language and English Literature syllabuses, meaning that at the end of their GCSE studies they will acquire two separate GCSE grades. The GCSE courses run for two years and during this time students are required to complete an equal study of both Literature texts and Language preparation, both of which are intertwined.  The academic years are broken down into the following study areas:

Year 10:

·         Term 1: Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’

·         Term 2: Fiction Novel, ‘A Christmas Carol’

·         Term 3: Poetry Anthology, ‘Power and Conflict’

·         Term 4: Play Script, ‘Blood Brothers’

·         Term 5: Poetry Anthology, ‘Power and Conflict’

·         Term 6: Speaking and Listening assessment

Year 11:

·         Term 1: Literature revision of all texts

·         Term 2: Language revision and mock examinations for both Literature and Language

·         Term 3: Literature revision of all texts

·         Term 4: Language revision and mock examinations for both Literature and Language

·         Term 5: Revision for both Literature and Language.  Focus on Literature, as exams this term

·         Term 6: Revision for Language as exams this term

The aim of the English Key Stage 4 curriculum is to prepare students for their final examinations and introduce them to a wide range of different texts and language types. Students will develop a range of skills over the two years including the ability to read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding, write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately, and they will also acquire and apply a strong range of vocabulary, with the ability to use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately. At the end of the course students will have completed one spoken language assessment and they will sit two examination papers for English Literature and two examination papers for English Language.
